The Essential Greeks (21)
Did you know the average student loan in the United States now exceeds the cost of a brand new luxury car?
It’s more than the amount needed to put a deposit on a home…
Or the amount needed to start a new business…
In fact, for the same price tag, you could buy ten round-the-world tickets, stay in the fanciest hotels, eat at the best restaurants and live like a king!
And what do these students get at the end of their enormous investment?
A guaranteed, minimum-wage job?
A lifetime of meaningful, fulfilling projects to enrich and engage them?
The prospect of career advancement, a six-figure salary, a corner office?
They get none of the above.
Instead, they get…
One study showed that it takes the average college grad 20 years to pay back their loan…if they ever pay it back at all!
Actually, it’s far worse than that.
Because student loan debt is non-dischargeable, it follows you around wherever you go… like a ball and chain… making you a debt slave, often for life.
That’s no way to live.
Of course, it wasn’t always like this. Nor does it have to be.
But most people will never question the status quo. They’ll just keep trudging along… until the debt is up to their eyeballs and escape is impossible.
And the worst part, even with all this expensive cost of college, they don’t even get a real education.
How do I know this?
Because I’m one of them. As a student, now working towards my PhD, I’ve been on the inside for quite a while now…
You see, there was a time when a well-rounded individual meant a firm grounding in something deeper than what is taught nowadays.
It meant being educated in the classics. [The greatest thinkers, from the Renaissance to the Enlightenment, had read the classics.]
But that’s Not happening Today.
Studying the classics today is largely confined to humanities departments, and even there you’d be lucky to find a single course that covers the essentials.
I don’t know why this is happening, but it doesn’t seem to me like enough people are upset about it.
But before I go on, you should ask yourself if the Classics are for you…
If you don’t like to push yourself intellectually, to question things most people don’t think about… Then the classics aren’t for you.
If you don’t think the wisdom of the past can inform us today… then the classics aren’t for you.
If you don’t want to improve your understanding of both yourself and others… then the classics aren’t for you.
On the other hand… If that is you, or if that’s the person you want to be, then I suggest you read on.
But how, you might ask, can studying the classics do all this?
Well, imagine this: You walk into a bar, the TV is on and turned to the news. Something political comes up and you strike up a conversation with the fellow next to you.
He becomes increasingly hostile as it becomes clear that you two have fundamentally different views. You nearly return the hostility.
But you pause.
You recall what horrors increasing polarization can lead to, as you learned from reading Thucydides’ account of the Corcyrean civil war.
You reflect on the understanding and patience that Socrates showed even towards those who were condemning him to death.
You think of Aristotle, who knew that anybody could get angry, and wonder whether this is a situation that calls for anger.
You decide, instead, to remain composed, to reach out to this person, to express your beliefs, and allow him to express his…
You summon the humility of Socrates, who always left open the possibility that he could be wrong…
And you think of how important it is to the health of a democracy to be able to sit down and talk with people we disagree with…
Because of this, you turn what would otherwise have been a tense situation into a productive conversation.
This is just one way that an education in the classics can improve your life. It can help you be a better person and an even better citizen.
But it doesn’t end there.
The prudence, moderation, understanding of others and oneself that is cultivated by studying the classics can help you be a better friend, a better partner, a better employee or employer, a better student or teacher, a better child or parent.
A better you.
Unfortunately, I don’t know why this type of education isn’t readily available anymore.
No longer do universities promote learning the intellectual and political foundations of Western society, or the philosophy and languages of the classical world. What was once the mark of an elite education has been pushed aside.
While I’m unsure of the reasons why this came to be, I’m happy that there are solutions. There are resources available for YOU to get a real education, a proper foundation in the Classics.
And the good news is that you don’t need a university for it…
Now, any well-rounded classical education begins with the ancient Greeks. After all, it is with the Greeks that classical wisdom is born.
Imagine you’re constructing a building. Do you begin with the top? No! You find a firm foundation, you gather the right materials, you get all the essentials.
The same goes for the classics. To begin construction on your knowledge of the classics, you must turn to the essentials—that is, to the Greeks.
The Essential Greeks is just that.
The Essential Greeks transports you to Athens, where you can listen as Socrates praises the pursuit of wisdom and the life of the mind.
The Essential Greeks transports you to the journey of Odysseus, and to the battlefields of the Iliad where hubris, vengeance, and cunning take center stage.
The Essential Greeks transports you to the battle of Thermopylae, where Leonidas and his Spartan compatriots demonstrate what courage and self-sacrifice look like.
This is what a REAL Education looks like…
The value of pursuing wisdom for its own sake;
The need for facing even the worst of situations courageously;
The beauty of contemplating life itself and what it means to live a good one;
These are just some of the things you will learn through the Essential Greeks.
But how, you might be asking, does the Essential Greeks do this?
Well, here at Classical Wisdom, we believe that the pursuit of wisdom is not one that ought to be carried out in solitude.
Socrates, after all, did not sit alone in a corner and read books!
If that were the case, there wouldn’t exist those beautiful dialogues we have of him, where he and his companions go back and forth, guiding each other towards the answers they seek.
In a similar fashion, Classical Wisdom will be your companion, helping to guide you as you navigate through some of the most significant, and exciting, centuries the world has ever known.
And so we begin together.
